TERRAIN: The easement road access takes you just off the hustling, bustling, 290 Wine Trail. WATER: Enjoy over 1100 feet of river frontage on the Pedernales River, a tributary of the Colorado River. The name Pedernales, first used in the middle 18th century, comes from a Spanish word for the flint rocks characteristic of the riverbed. The river rises from springs in southeasternKimble County, approximately 25 miles (40km) southeast ofJunction. It flows generally east intoGillespie County, pastFredericksburg, and intoBlanco County, passing north ofJohnson City. It joins the Colorado from the southwest inLake Travis, approximately 10 miles (16km) west of Austin.
The river has a close association with the Texas Hill Country, tied to the history of the region and emblematic of its geography. Along its route it flows over numerous ruggedlimestoneescarpments as it winds eastward, passing along the south side of the ranch of PresidentLyndon B. Johnson, who grew up in nearbyStonewall, south of the river.
In 1750,Fray Benito Fernndez de Santa Anaproposed a plan to theSpanishgovernment that a mission be established among theLipan Apachewho lived along the river. In 1789, the river was the site of a skirmish between ColonelFrancisco Xavier Ugaldeand a group of Lipan andMescaleroIndians. The first permanent white settlement along the river was in 1846, when the town of Fredericksburg was established byGermanimmigrants. The threat of raids from Apaches restricted settlement in the area until the 1880s.
