Property Description

Zahn Lake Ranch is a 1,167+/- acre goose hunters paradise. This very unique property has two large playa lakes set in the middle of farm country and provides exceptional wintering waterfowl habitat. Zahn Lake is approximately 300 acres in size when full at around 4 feet. This lake overflows into Johnson Lake, which is about 85 acres when full at 2 feet. Any conservationist will have great appreciation for the role these lakes play as an important roost for thousands and thousands of wintering Canada, specklebelly and snow geese. The ranch was purchased by the current owner in the 1990s, and wiith a passion for waterfowl hunting the current owner set out to restore the property back to the original playa lake wetlands that are winter home to these large numbers of migratory ducks and geese. The restoration of Zahn Lake and Johnson Lake was done using the Wetland Reserve Program-in partnership with the Natural Resource Conservation Service. These wetlands make way to exceptional duck and goose hunting. Along with exceptional waterfowl hunting there is a healthy amount of wooded cover for deer. Dove hunting is outstanding as well with a 50 acre sunflower field attracting birds from all the surrounding farm country.

Land and Habitat: There are 85 acres of cultivation used for wheat in the fall for forage and attractant for wintering geese and whitetails. In the summer one of the 50 acre fields is planted in native sunflower for a fall dove attractant. The balance of the range has been restored to native grasslands and holds a few coveys of quail.

Improvements: 200 acres on the west side of the property (and another 5 acres on the east) sit outside of the permanent conservation easement. An old feed barn has been converted into a very unique rustic five-bedroom lodge that is set up to sleep 20 along with a large entertaining area perfect to pass the time between hunts. With these improvements in place there are income opportunities available right away through leasing or outfitting.
